Any fence can increase the value of your home. It can also improve the aesthetics of your yard creating a private space that is set aside just for you and family.

But trying to decide what type of fence to buy isn’t always easy. Here are a few questions to ask yourself.

What’s the style of the home and neighborhood?

If everyone else in the neighborhood has a beautiful wooden fence, you don’t want to be the stand-out with chain-link.

Your ranch-style house or mid-century modern home may be better served with a wood fence than an iron one. If you have a large, stately American Foursquare or Folk Victorian home, an iron fence may be the best way to bring out the home’s personality.

Start by walking around your neighborhood and taking a look at other houses for inspiration.

How much time do you have for maintaining the fence?

Wood fences must be pressure washed each year, and need to be coated in an oil-based stain every two. If you choose to paint your fence instead you’ll need to do that once a year. Should you choose for your fence to look organic then let the weather take its course on it.

An iron fence looks beautiful year round.  It may require light painting touch up. However, if you choose the right material, galvanized or a prefabricated fence is virtually  maintenance free.

What’s the purpose of the fence?

Just trying to keep your kids and inside the yard? Then a chain link fence might be all you need. This is also a good choice if you intend to cover the fence with climbing plants like morning glories, creating a “natural hedge” effect.

Trying to give yourself some privacy in addition to security? A wooden fence can be built to keep anyone from seeing into the yard at all.

Want to keep people out while increasing your home’s curb appeal? The iron fence is the way to go.

While you’re at it, don’t forget about adding a custom security gate to your driveway! It doesn’t do much good to build a fence around your home if you’re going to let just anyone come right up to the door.
